From circles. Circular 3-cornered dish transposed to other polygons. I figured out the general principles for folding this design from n-sided circled polygons. (Well, minimal n is 3, and when n increases, so does the difficulty) Dedicated to my friend Oschene, who taught me folding from circles.

This photo was taken on 2006-12-01 in Switzerland.

Looks like n is directly related to bowl size and angle of the side and inversely related to the strength of the lock?

Right, except for the angle of the side, which is strongly related to twist width, i think : the bigger the twist is, more vertical is the side (difficult to guess when you can't see the bottom). here, circles are not all same size, and twist size on some bowls has no defined landmarks, it is not a very scientific experimentation, i admit !

*blush* thank you - that's very kind. once you start folding circles, it's hard to stop, isn't it? these are lovely - i particularly like the 5 and 7. (nothing if not predictable, eh?) was the twist landmarked on some of the bowls. like the 4,5,6 and 8?

At the moment i have reproductible landmarks only for 3, 4 and 6. for the others, i made a visual guess and then used a ruler (the horror, the indignity, etc, i know). these are prototypes, i hope i'm able to refine the method a bit.

My favorite is the one with the pentagon base. i think they are kind of similar to roberto gretter's dish but his are from squares turn into octagons
