Jack Shelley's Funeral By Boat. The coverage of the preparations of the Origami funerary barge and the ceremony at which Jack Shelley, juvenile shore crab and inadvertent pet, is sent on his last journey on the river back to the sea.
Special note: This was a one off action, not to be emulated, as in the UK pets are either buried or cremated and some require special disposal due to environmental and health risks.
Jack was a very small individual (about 1gram), of a native species who inadvertently became a pet when plankton in a sea water sample settled and developed into this small crab. Whilst leaving a big hole in my heart he would have little impact on environment or health.

| Chris thomas [21-May-2013] Thanks for your sympathies re jack shelley's funeral! shore crabs (as jack shelley was) can tolerate a wide variety of temperatures and salinities - which? makes them very invasive pests when transported beyond europe. there is no thriving crab population upstream of the tidal regions of the ouse, suggesting that any freshwater activites by jack would have required a full enclosed diving suit . sadly, this opportunity has been taken from him through his untimely death. |
