Kahului, Hawaii - Paper Airplane Museum




This museum bills itself as the "First Aviation Museum on Maui" and the "World's Only Known Paper Airplane Museum".

It holds a collection of over 2,000 cardboard airplane models and kits as well as photos relating to Hawaii's aviation history.

Only those airplanes that are 95% paper qualify for the museum.



The museum also features the creations of owner Ray Roberts, "The Tin Can Man of Maui.

" Ray builds models of ships, airplanes, cars, etc.

, out of soda cans.

On display was his chef d'oevre, a model of the Concord Jet, which used over 90 cans.

Almost all of his creations are for sale.

(The Concord has a price tag of $700).


Aviation buffs and fans of local history will find the most satisfaction at this mall museum.

Photographs from the early 20th century to the present day chart Hawaii's aviation history.

Accompanying them are displays of more than 2500 paper airplanes, ranging from da Vinci's 15th-century model to a current one of the space shuttle.

If you'd like to tackle a project on your own, kits in all levels of difficulty are for sale.

Other items are also available at the gift shop.
