If you're adventurous, try batik! The ancient form of wax-resist dyeing of fabric. I did it at home for a school project a few years ago and I thought it was tons of fun. You can find supplies and instructions at

Stained glass making (friend took a class on it, loved it and started a small side business) Candlemaking (cousin started as hobby, now is a part-time business) Lamp making Making hand-made soaps Making/recycling paper (this is the favorite hobby of a guy I know and the end product, whether it be stationary or a box, looks very classy and elegant). Making hand-mixed lotions Gourmet cooking Candymaking Building Gingerbread houses (locally our Historical Museum sponsors a contest where individuals, scout troops, classrooms to professional bakeries build from simple houses to extravagant displays out of Gingerbread. Also, some of my son's favorite Christmas memories have been us building gingerbread houses together, even when they turned out looking more like shacks than houses). Breadmaking (I took a croissant making course at local shop and it was fun and easier than it sounds to make) Collage making (cutting or tearing pictures and words out of magazines, or combining them with your own photos). Basketweaving (thought it would be easy since people always talk about crazy people being "basket cases" and weaving baskets, but when I tried it, it was not that easy). Rug making - using the latch hook method and a kit is the easiest way to go, but I have even seen on the internet a rug made out of old plastic grocery bags that were braided and then woven together - haven't tried it yet, but plan to in the future. Stenciling - using a stencils on an object to make a design. You can use a bleach pen and on a pair of old jeans with a stencil and come out with a rad designer one-of-a kind pair of paints. Re-fashioning existing clothing - Threadbanger.com is a excellent site with video tutorials on how-to refashion a variety of clothing, such as an old suit into board shorts and a vest, a t-shirt into a bikini top and a t-shirt and fabric into a goth looking zip up hoodie. My current project is turning an old tank top into a tote bag for library books with MST3K (I am a Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan) looking design. Fleece lap or kid's blankets - Super easy and even grade school kids can do it. All you need is two large pieces of fleece the same size, pin them together, then make 4 inch cuts and inch or so apart through both fabrics, then tie the pieces of the top and bottom layer together.

What about macrame? I was at a craft show in Nov in Denver where a lady had quite a bit of macrame things - everything from gorgeous plant hangers to vests and bags.. I'll tell you she was abt swamped with people buying and taking orders! I remember quite a few yrs ago when it was very pop but don't see much of it any more.. :) Jill
